The KY KM-675 is their least expensive, but all solid wood F-style. Just for the record, I've never played a Rover, so that may be nice too. I doubt that is the case with a Big Muddy (even though it doesn't look like a bluegrass box). But many of the sub-$500.00 instruments will be lacking something. These are the real deal and well made.īuy what you're happy with. If you want to learn, learn on something that you'll enjoy for the long haul.
Don't underestimate the power of a flat-top mandolin. That said, you'll get great playability, sound and enjoyment. They just don't look like "What Bill Monroe played". In many respects you will get some of the pop, chop and drive that you're looking for, but something remains missing. Here's the problem with the sub-$500.00 arch-top f-hole mandolins: They really are entry-level mandolins. An a-model arch top with f-holes is all you need for the pop, chop and drive of bluegrass. The reason that you'll hear "forget the f-model" in your price range, is because you're paying for the wrong thing (again at your price point). The scroll adds almost nothing to the sound. In mandolins there is such a different "look" between the f-model and the a-model, that folks think there is a big difference. Folks may fuss over body size, scale length and top woods, but the "look" (i.e., curves, bouts, etc.) is not too different. Other than the arch-top guitar lineup, most guitars "look" about the same. Definitely don't get the Epi F-style heavy laminate back/sides kill the sound. My better half has a solid wood Michael Kelly F-style & I couldn't really recommend it. I'm looking on EBay and they can be had new for around $600, but used for considerably less.ĮDIT: Just looked at Folk of the Wood KM-675S solid woods KY mando made in China for $599 new. If you want an F-style, the least expensive Ky in solid woods is the KM-675 (correct me if I'm wrong, Mike). You could get a highend Kentucky A style that would sound darn nice (heck I started out with a factory 2nd KM-150S all solid Ky for $150 that sounded good). In your budget, everyone is correct that you'd get more mando for buck in an A-style.
